A couple weeks ago, I was listening to an episode of the Knowledge Project and the guest was Matthew Dicks. He was talking about the art of storytelling and I was captivated. Soon thereafter, I bought his book and after it inevitably, sat on the bookshelf for a bit, I have recently picked it up and found it a fantastic read.
He explains that people have different motivations for learning to tell stories, ranging from improving a sales pitch to reconnecting with grandchildren. Personally, I think storytelling is fun! I think being able to share the important experiences in your life with the people around you in a meaningful way is the key to making a connection. Part of the reason, I started this blog is to be able to practice just that - conveying my experiences and ideas in an articulate manner.
His concept of Homework for Life is intruiging and something I will be trying out this year. The idea is that you take 5 minutes a day to think about one Storyworthy moment of your day: something you can recount to an audience or even at the dinner table to your friends in an entertaining manner. Not only does it help you reflect on your day and notice patterns in your life but it helps you develop the skill of finding interesting stories in ordinary moments.
